Itit is clear that there is a 'workload culture' in the organisation concerned organisations. In countries like Japan, the culture of overwork is nothing new. The karoshi culture (meaning death by overwork) has led to many Japanese workers committing suicide because they worked too much, so much so that they were burnt out. For this reason, a report by the think tank Autonomy has called for two amendments to the Employment Rights Act 1996. These amendments are designed to ensure that workers have the right to completely disconnect from any workwork-related communication outside of working hours and to take their case to an employment tribunal if this right is breached. As a result of overwork, workers are likely to suffer from lack of sleep, increased blood pressure, increased risk of heart attack or stroke and are more likely to make mistakes at work.
