In the third chapter of the novella, the theme of ‘Abuse of Power and Corruption” is one of the main focuses. This theme develops as the pigs have assumed control of the farm, to whichand they abuse their authority. This is highlighted in two situations, quoted “We pigs are brain workers. The whole management and organization of this Farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples.” as well as, “ Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed our duty? Jones will come back!”
In both situations, Squealer is trying to justify the pigs' act of selfishness of taking resources by trying to persuade the other animals. Although the animals are not happy with this they are silenced by their fear of Mr. Jones. As, as Squealer threatens that if the pigs do not get the apples and milk, Mr. Jones will return. With this oppression the animals now see the pigs as the top priority, creating a blind loyalty to the pigs. Moreover, the Corruptioncorruption of the pigs is shown as though they preach equality to the animals; however, it is overruled by their actions. Asas the pigs believe that they are more important due to their knowledge. In addition, Orwell uses this theme to show that knowledge of the pigs along with their use of language, allows them to persuade the animals in all forms, keeping their leadership and gaining more than others.
