In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry through, the plot twist of the insurance money, shows how going after your dreams leadscan lead to harsh decisions. For example, Mama Younger handed Walter $6,500 and sayssaid, “I’m telling you to be the head of the family from now on” (2.2). People didn’t consider Walter to be very trustworthy when it came to things financiallyin terms of financial things, but Mama thinks he can be trusted with this sum of money. Mama was originally unsure about giving the money to Walter or giving it to Beneatha. They both want the money to accomplish a dream. But, Mama decides she can trust Walter to put the money in the bank for both him and Beneatha. This is Walter’s very first time dealing with this much money, and he has some big decisions to make with this money. In response to being handed the $6,500, Walter says to his son Travis, “I hand you the world” (2.2). Now, with the money, he has, Walter can start towards his dream of opening the liquor store. He believes that the store will make enough money for the Younger family to accomplish any dream they want, like living the ‘American Dream’. Dream.’ With the money, Walter will have to make big decisions to achieve his dream.
