John Donne, the famous 16th- and 17th-century poet, was born into a pious Catholic family in 1572. Donne, however, because of his deep religious faith, refused to recite the Oath of Supremacy to the King, resulting in him onlyhis receiving only a partial education from Hart Hall, Oxford (Brackett). It is estimated that Donne became a poet around 1592, beginning with romantic poetry, along with five satires. In his famous satires, he portrays a continued confidence in the importance of religion, in which he claims is the duty of any person that has moral standards. Among the romantic poems and satires he wrote are the nineteen Holy Sonnets.
His poems speak on the basis of openness that he had towards welcoming anything that belief may give him. Donne’s wife, Ann More, whom he married in 1601, and his eleven children suffered greatly due to his overwhelmingly desperate attempts to get his poems recognized. After multiple failed attempts to get support for his writings, Donne felt guilty for putting his family in poverty. Motivated by his guilt, Donne pursued a career in the Anglican Church (---.). To start, he took holy orders,. James I then named him royal chaplain, in wherewhich capacity he worked at Lincoln’s Inn in 1616. Despite, Donne finally relieving his family from poverty, his wife Ann would only be able to appreciate it for a year, as she died during the birthing of their 12th child. LaterThen, after falling very ill, Donne passed away on March 31, 1631. Among his most famous works is the song “Go and Catch a Falling Star,” and the hymns “Hymn to Christ,” and “A Hymn to God the Father.” His most known poems include, “The Flea,” "The Apparition,” and “Death Be Not Proud” (---.)
