“Sinners in the Hands of an
Angry God,” which was written by Johnathan Edwards, uses a direct address to emphasize his points of damnation and sin of all human beings. To begin, Edwards incorporates the technique of direct address in a number of ways to try and persuade his readers that they need to be saved from damnation, though it will be tough to please him. For example, on page 109 in the Elements of Literature textbook, Edwards states: “O sinner! Consider the fearful danger you are in…” By voicing this, Edwards directly points out to the people in the church that they should analyze their lifelives and determine how well their connection isconnections are with God.
