In Maya Angelou’s memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Marguerite has to overcome many difficult obstacles and find herself asin order to become a confident young African American woman. The hardships and adversities Maya Angelou had to overcome as a child were horrific, and no one should ever have to deal with a childhood as she did, but I can still relate to her struggle of having a broken family at a young age. Unfortunately, my sisters and I have had to deal with our parents separating at young ages, and we are all on a journey of self discoveryself-discovery and acceptance with each other.
Although I am close with my mother and still live with her, my relationship with my father is similar to the one Marguerite has with her father. I relate to Marguerite when she said, “There were foggy days of unknowing for Bailey and me. It was all well and good to say we would be with our parents, but after all, who were they?” (Angelou 155).
