Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damages the natural environment into the atmosphere. In 1970 congress designed the Clean Air Act to fight a variety of air pollution problems, and tackle emerging pollution threats. The act authorizes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in coordination with state, local, and tribal governments to protect public health by regulating the emissions of these harmful air pollutants. Although the government has made great progress since 1970 in cleaning the air, the job is far from complete. In 1990 the Clear Air Act was revised and that set the stage for protecting the ozone layer, reducing acid rain and toxic pollutants, and improving air quality and visibility. The Clean Air Act was the first major environmental law in the United States.

All air pollutants cause some damage to living creatures and the environment. When too much carbon dioxide gas is released into the air it upsets the carbon cycle balance and adds to global warming. Acid rain is created when gasses get high into the atmosphere and can damage forests and kill fish.
