OBJECTIVE
1.
To facilitate respiratory ventilation by removing secretions that obstruct the airway and to prevent infection that may result from accumulated secretions.

DEFINITION
1.
Suctioning – is the aspiration of secretions, often through a rubber or polyethylene catheter connected to a suction machine or wall outlet.
2.
Oral pharyngeal – suction of the pharynx and hypo pharynx (mouth).
3.
Nasotracheal – using the nasal passages (nares, nostrils) to suction the trachea below the level of the vocal cords.
4.
Endotracheal – suctioning of the trachea and upper airways through and artificial airway of intubated patients.

POLICY
1.
Suctioning must be performed by a staff nurse, with or without written order of a physician, under antiseptic technique.
2.
Frequency of the suctioning should depend on the needs of the patients.
3.
Suction must not be applied when introducing the catheter.
4.
Normal saline should be used for suctioning.
5.
Suction pressure should be regulated at 60-80mm Hg for neonates.
6.
Patients must be observed during and after the procedure to prevent complications.
