Our participant has suffered debilitating consequences of three strokes over the course of fifteen years. As a result, he experienced left-sided weakness, decreased left hand dexterity and dysphagia. One of the three main themes identified throughout the interview of which, the key theme was his confidence in the activities he was previously involved in. An analysis of the interview suggests the reasons behind the decrease in confidence could be due to his elevated sense of safety for himself, his over-analysis of his daily routines, self-criticism and/or a self-assessing behaviour. Upon further investigation, he reveals that he found himself “largely wasting a lot of the weekend” at a holiday trip, since he did not “pursue fishing aggressively” considering his “eyesight and the coordination”. This suggests that he has to think hard before indulging in the activity/activities at hand. Furthermore, he stated that “[he has] lost confidence in standing in quite fast water and [his] stability is not all that good” because of which “[he finds himself] taking a little bit of a ducking”.
Furthermore, another theme we identified was lifestyle changes while staying active. He is a lawyer by profession, which demanded a dynamic routine and kept him busy throughout the day. After the strokes, he acquired a job that does not demand the same routine. He further added, “I don’t set an alarm anymore”, which according to him is "different, but its fine". When we touched on topic of hobbies, he expressed his feelings at a holiday trip, explaining he was double-minded about fly-fishing. However, he continues to go out with his friends and family for dinners as a part of his active lifestyle. On further discussion, we recognised age (72 years old) as one of the factors towards lifestyle changes. For example, his weak eyesight. With age one undergoes changes physiologically and psychologically, that commonly decline. Nonetheless, the psychological changes did not affect him as much as the physiological changes did in addition to stroke complications.
Finally, it was clear that his relationships with family and friends were healthy. It is important to note this because, analysing from the interview, it can be understood that these healthy relationships help him forget about his condition or limitations. This also motivates him to stay active. Even though his social engagement has decreased, his friends and family continued to support him. He is humbled and grateful to have his wife aton his bad and good days. He further added that he reduced alcohol noticeably after his marriage. His drinking status dropped to modest drinker from being between high to moderate. It could have been easy for him to stay in isolation given his illness, nevertheless, he preferred staying in touch with his best friends.
