Proposed Preceptor Training Program

Preceptor Training Program Design

Based on
a conducted literature review, evidence, and available resources in the Pakistan nursing education system, the proposed preceptor training program is designed and an implementation and evaluation plan subsequently advised. Three nursing preceptor models were studied and integrated while designing the preceptor training program. The nursing preceptor models which served as a foundation for developing a preceptor training program, included Adult Learning Theory, Novice to Expert Theory, and Preceptor Conceptual Model. These models were put forward to ease some of the problems faced by preceptee and preceptor and assist in guiding the preceptorship. Thus, this integrative approach in developing preceptor training program may support, enhance, and promote the successful training for both preceptor and preceptee in Pakistan nursing education.
Core Components Included to Design Preceptor Training Program
The incorporated core components to design the preceptor training program involved:
• Responsibilities and role of preceptor
• Adult learning and teaching approach
• Novice to expert
• Cultural competence
• Time management
• Problem-solving and critical thinking
Provision of safe environment along with continued motivation and appreciation
• Effective evaluation
Topics were split into different modules after identifying the different core topics to design the preceptor training program with the help of literature, in order to offer a chronological format and organized preceptor training program. A total of
9nine modules are suggested for the preceptor training program. The suggested maximum length of each module is about 2two to 4four hours, although, the suggested maximum length of the whole preceptor training program is between 1one to 3three weeks, depending on the preceptor’s personal and professional circumstances, and considering that most of the preceptors enrolled in the program must be the full- time or part-time employees. This module could be offered to the preceptors via online, or face-to-face as per organizational protocol or set-up, although it is recommended that it should be the mandatory course for all those nurses who are serving as a preceptor, and currently assisting in the transition of newly nursing graduates, or nursing students. The modules details are outlined below.
