Furthermore another character in the Great Gatsby twhato shows the corruption of the American dream is Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby’s pursuit of pleasure for Daisy makes him lose his morals and go into an illegal business, leading to the corruption of the American Dream. Tom Buchanan says “He and this Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side-street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter” (Fitzgerald, pg.142). For Gatsby to get rid of his poor image and become wealthy he changes his name. “The transformation between James Gatz and Jay Gatsby is an example of how people can transform themselves according to their ambition for wealth and prosperity” (Beranda, 2014). Jay Gatsby went into an illegal occupation to make himself rich to win Daisy’s love, which is the opposite of the American Dream. The American Dream states that only the good, the virtuous, and thardose who work hard are rewarded and Gatsby shows the opposite of it by getting his money through a dishonest business and not working hard. Gatsby demonstrates the corruption of the American Dream by the degradation of his morals in his pursuit of pleasure for Daisy. In addition in Gatsby’s pursuit of pleasure for Daisy he gets overwhelmed in his wealth and becomes materialistic in order to win Daisy’s love. Gatsby says to Daisy and Nick, “I got a man in England who buys me clothes. He sends over a selection of things at the beginning of each season, spring and fall. He took out a pile of shirts iof sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many coloured disarray” (Fitzgerald, pg.98). In the hopes tof getting Daisy’s attention, Gatsby starts to flaunt his wealth. He has a humongous house that is across the bay from Daisy’s in hopes to catch her attention and show his wealth off to her. Gatsby becomes more involved in materialistic things like getting shirts from England so that he can show Daisy that he’s worthy of her. Gatsby demonstrates the corruption of the American Dream through his pursuit of pleasure for Daisy’s love, as he believes that the more money he makes and shows off, the greater chance he will have to win Daisy back. Gatsby indulged everything he could in his life to make both his possessions and life perfect in his pursuit to win Daisy’s love back, showing the corruption of the American Dream.
