In the book "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" by Erika L. Sánchez, we are introduced to a poor Hispanic immigrant family that lives in America, ChicagoAmerica—Chicago, Illinois specificallyto be specific. As soon as you read the book, you get right into the main issue,: the death of a family member, Olga. As a result of thisher death, the entire family goes intoenters a dangerous mental state, especially Julia, herstate—especially Olga's little sister, Julia.
Julia is left in a state of denial mentally, which is perceived as normal toby the outside world. However, her parents aren’t much help to her, either, because of mental and economic issues. Julia doesn’t realize she needs help until it’s almost too late. Although throughout the text, theJulia (the main protagonist Julia andprotagonist), as well as her family are facing, face a wide variety of issues after her sister’s Olga’s death, ultimately Julia is the one who suffers the most and who is most harshly judged byfor it, because she is a poor Hispanic immigrant. andIn her world, having any internal issues is justsimply not viewedseen as acceptable for her situation.
We get to know fromFrom Julia’s perspective, we learn that Olga was the oldest sisterolder of the two daughters, and that she was hit and run over by a semi-truck at a very young age. Olga was the more mature and proper daughter, compared to Julia, and she had had big dreams and wanted to goof going to Medical Schoolmedical school. For Julia’s parents (who are referred(referred to as "Ama" and "Apa"), they consideredviewed Olga as “the perfect Mexican daughter” in their eyesdaughter."
