However, by the time he showed up, the intimated danger had passed due to King Alfonso and many other soldiers on both sides being taken by the Black Death. The black deathBlack Death, which iswas caused by Yersinia pestis and was transmitted to humans through rats. So, he continued on his journey to the strait of Gibraltar as a tourist, not a soldier. There, he and his party met up with another group of twelve travelers;. Ibn wanted to join them on their journey;, but decided to stay with his party. Later, Ibn found out that one of the travelers was murdered, another escaped, and the rest waswere held captive by pirates. Ibn thanked God that he had not received the same fate as these travelers. Ibn then spent the night in a Castelcastle, and in the morning, an officer escorted the group to Málaga. While in Málaga, he meets themet a preacher and thea qadi, who waswere trying to raise money for the ransom to help thethe captive travelers that Ibn Battuta had almost joined.
